tutor selection process

We believe that the key to our success as a company is the results that we help you to achieve, and to do this our tutors must be of the highest quality. To ensure that courses of tuition are successful we place a strong emphasis on matching the tutor to the pupil. Everyone is different and because of this we recruit tutors who are not only experts in their fields but are amiable individuals who come from a variety of backgrounds so that we are able to find tutors who can make the tuition a pleasant time.

We have the highest of standards, more than 80% of people who apply to our agency are turned away. This is compared to many agencies in London to whom you merely have to send a CV and an clean criminal record check in order to enter onto their books.

In order to become a tutor with Holland Park, an applicant must first prove their academic credentials through their CV`s. Once it has been ascertained that, on paper, this person is someone that we would like to represent us, we interview the applicant for a minimum of 20 minutes. If the applicant is able to suitably satisfy their interviewer they are required to attend a training session which we have developed to ensure that they will be able to cope with any situation, and also help the student in the best way possible. Much emphasis is put on role plays, and the most effective methods of organising courses of tuition.

The successful applicant will then be required to produce

a valid passport
full documentation of qualifications
a valid Enhanced Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau

One of our key principles is that it is not necessarily true that teachers make the best tutors. While classroom teaching experience is an exceptional, admirable ability it is not always those who are best in the classroom that can organise the best courses of tuition. Our ideal of a perfect tutor would be someone who has a genuine interest in teaching, an affable nature, someone who is an expert in their subject, and a young person who can build a rapid good rapport with the student. While teaching skills and qualifications are helpful, and respected by our agency, there is a difference between one-on-one tuition and classroom teaching. Similarly, there is a difference in approach, and often personality, between those who excel in a class room, and those who can get the most out of pupils in a one-on-one environment.

At Holland Park we build close, tight relationships with our tutors. We look to recruit pleasant, fun individuals who are passionate about the subjects they teach, but also share our satisfaction and pleasure in helping children (and adults!) to learn and succeed. We have no minimum or maximum age requirements, but we do look for people who will be able to relate to their pupils and build rapport in a way that extends beyond a teacher pupil relationship.
